Gerad Fugleberg- Head Varsity Coach
Coach Fugleberg is entering his 7th year as Head Coach of the Spud wrestling team. Coach Fugleberg grew up locally, graduating from Fargo South High School, in Fargo, North Dakota in 2010. He was a three-time letter winner in football and five-time letter winner in wrestling with the Bruins. He was a 2-time wrestling state finalist, bringing home one Runner-up finish and one state championship. The Bruins also had three top 4 state team finishes under, then Head Coach, Lynn Forde. The highlight of those state finishes was during Fugleberg's junior year when the Bruins finished 2nd in state as a dual team. Coach Fugleberg continued his wrestling career at Minnesota State University Moorhead under Head Coach Kris Nelson. He was a 3 year starter for the Dragons and would go on to graduate from MSUM with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education.
Fugleberg is now a teacher at Horizon Middle School in Moorhead as well as as an assistant football coach for the 9th grade football team. Coach Fugleberg is married to current Spud head volleyball coach, Amber Fugleberg since August of 2020 and they have a son named Tatum and a daughter, Emerson, born December 9th, 2024.
JJ Fankhanel - Assistant Varsity Coach
Coach Fankhanel is entering his 8th year coaching the Spud wrestling team.
JJ graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1993, where he wrestled for Ron Gadberry and got to know his future wife Amy who was the wrestling team statistician. JJ entered the USMC after graduation, spending five years with the 3rd Marine Regiment, in Hawaii and two years in California. After the USMC he returned to Moorhead earning an Associates Degree in Construction Management. After a few years working in the construction industry he returned to MSUM and completed his Bachelors Degree in Physical Education and a Minor in Coaching. JJ taught in Pelican Rapids, MN where he also coached wrestling for seven years. He has been working as the Lead Child and Youth Program Coordinator for the ND Army National Guard for the past four years, and has a total of 16 years of total military service. He and his family moved to Moorhead in 2016, were he began coaching at Moorhead High School. In May of 2018 he completed a Master Degree in Educational Psychology and Counseling. JJ and his wife Amy and have a daughter and two sons; Miranda, Evan and Zack.
Trent Sovde - Assistant Varsity Coach
Trent returns to Moorhead for his 7th year coaching the Spuds in his third stint with the team.
Collin Haar - Assistant Junior Varsity Coach
Collin is entering his 4th year as a Spud Wrestling Coach. Collin is from Aberdeen, SD where he wrestled for 15 years of his life including a 6 year varsity career where he accumulated a record of 166-75. Collin was a 4 time state placer for Aberdeen Central and won a state championship as a senior. After high school, he attended Moorhead State to play football for the Dragons. Collin graduated from MSUM in the spring of 2023 with a Bachelor's degree in Physical and Health education with a minor in coaching and in DAPE. Collin is now a physical education teacher at Horizon East and also coaches freshman football for the Spuds.
Jon Smith- Assistant High School Coach
Coach Smith is entering his 1st year with the Spiuds. Jon is a Mora High School graduate where he was a three time state entrant and a one time placer. Jon attended Concordia University in Moorhead where he played football graduated with a degree in Physical Education. Outside of wrestling and teaching, Jon enjoys hanging out with his dogs, Benny and Brat, and his girlfriend Katie. Jon has 6 years of experience coaching youth wrestling and is excited to join the Spuds!
Jack White - Co-Head Jr. High Coach
Jack is entering his 4th season with the Spuds wrestling staff. Jack is from Osseo, MN where he wrestled for former Spud Assistant David Ahmed. Jack started wrestling at a very young age and participated in the sport throughout high school where he wrestled 4 years of varsity. He is currently at NDSU studying to be an engineer.
Matt Henry-Co-head Jr. High & Head Coach of the Moorhead Magic
Matt is entering his first year coaching the Spuds at this level. He has 27 years of coaching youth wrestling under his belt and now brings that experience to our middle school level. Matt is a 2000 grad for Moorhead High School where he was a 4 year letter winner, and went on to compete collegiately at MSUM for two years before a knee injury ended his competitive career. Matt is married to his wife Amanda, who is a principal at Horizon west. They have two kids Addy and Cam who are a team manager for the girls team, and wrestler for the boys team respectively.
Zion Dyer- Assisant Jr. High & High School Coach
Zion is entering his 3rd year with the Spuds. Zion is a former Spud wrestler and varsity captain his senior year. He was a HWT varsity wrestler for 3 years and ended his career with a record of (record). He also played football for the Spuds and won a state title in 2020. Zion is now a student at NDSU, studying sports management.
Ryan Quade- Assisant Jr. High Coach
Ryan enters his 1st year coaching with Moorhead while also bringing much coaching experience. Ryan graduated from Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in 1999 where he was a 5 year letter winner. Ryan helped coach high school wrestling at Sauk Centre for the 2001-2002 season and went on to help with youth wrestling for 25 years, most recently with Moorhead Magic. Ryan and his wife have 3 kids; Gavin, who is currently playing baseball at Northern State University, Griffin, a recent Spud Wrestling Alumni, and Graden, who is currently a junior at Moorhead High School.
Chase Morlock - Volunteer Assisant Jr. High & High School Coach
Chase is in his first year of helping out with the Spuds. He was a 2013 grad for Moorhead. He was a 4 time state entrant where he placed; 4th, 2nd and 1st place, bringing a title home with the Spuds. Chase would go on to play football collegiately for NDSU where he was a part of 3 national championship teams. Chase is married to Heidi, and they have three kids; Leo, Lucy, and Shepherd. Chase also owns and operates Rise Training and Fitness and ETS Performance in Moorhead.
