Moorhead Comes Up Short in Matches with Little Falls and Alexandria
The Spud boys wrestling team hit the road this Thursday to take on #10 ranked Little Falls and Alexandria in a triangular dual meet. A lot of competitive wrestling opened the door for both experienced Veterans and some newer wrestlers to showcase their skills in Moorhead's first competition of the season.
The Spuds kicked off the evening in a head-to-head bout with the hosting team, Little Falls. 8th grader Landon Rinke, would be the one to get the first points for Moorhead, winning his match over Seth Ramsdell with a second period fall. Senior Michael Jenkins contributed to the winning ways with a second period fall of his own the very next match.
The next Spud victories came at the 145 and 152lb class, where junior Dane Ellingsberg won his bout with a first period fall and Dalton Humeniuk recorded an 8-1 victory respectively. Little Falls followed up Humeniuk by going on a run, claiming the next 4 weights before Spud senior, Demarco Clay would close out the dual with a fall at 285lbs.
To begin the dual against Alexandria, junior Carson Olschlager would kick off for Moorhead at the 107lb class with a victory over Phoenix Swore by a score of 9-4. Landon Rinke, Michael Jenkins, and Dane Ellingsberg would keep the trend going from the first dual recording the next three wins for the Spuds. Dalton Humeniuk also kept his winning ways going in the second dual, this time up a weight wrestling 160lbs.
Demarco Clay, again finished the dual with another fall extending his day to 2-0 as well. Also competing for the Spuds on the varsity side tonight were; Owen Borud, Gunner Burke, Josh Beach, Genesis Kamara, Alex Arellano, and Riley Paquin.
While the Spuds' varsity was competing, the junior varsity was going as well. Picking up wins for Moorhead on the night were; Raiden Mannock, Hank Paquin, Alonzo Ramirez, Shelton Fridgen, Jameson Dombeck, and Christian Badillo. Spuds are back in action this Saturday, as they head down to the St. Michael-Albertville Invite.

Spud Wrestling Team Look to Start Strong As Competition Season Approaches
The Moorhead wrestling season is underway as the Spuds prepare to compete in their first event this Thursday December 5th in Little Falls, MN. The Spuds are a little over two weeks into their season and have had a strong start to their season in practice. Though practice has been great, the Spuds are excited to take to the mat this Thursday!
Kicking off competition and coming in as the starter at 107lbs will be junior, Carson Olschlager. Carson will be challenged by a pack of 8th graders throughout the season. Jeffery McDonald, Raiden Mannock, Joel Johnson, and Colton Sather look to make a push as the year goes on. The 114lb weight class will be held down by freshman Tru Mahlen. Competing alongside Tru at the weight class will be fellow freshman, Shelton Fridgen, Kellen Sundet, and 8th grader Blake Hughes.
Returning state qualifier, Landon Rinke looks to be the guy slated to wrestle 121lbs. Landon is an 8th grader who will be competing with the spot with freshmen Uriah Nilson and Jameson Dombeck. Senior captain Michael Jenkins is another returning state qualifier who is set to wrestle 127lbs for the Spuds. Pushing Micahel will be; 9th grader, Greyson Dickhaus, and 8th graders, Jayden Mattern-Badillo and Gunner Burke.
The Spuds continue with experience at 133lb as Owen Borud, a sophomore returns to the starting line-up. Competing with Owen will be senior newcomer Nate Lange. Perhaps the deepest weight class for the spuds is the 139lb class. Croix Mongeau leads the group as a sophomore, but all members of the weight class have varsity match experience. Jeff Beadle (Jr.), Micayah Garcia-Ortiz (So.), and Hank Paquin (Fr.) look to keep pushing and competing.
145lbs goes to the 2 time state qualifier and team captain Dane Ellingsberg. Dane will have the support of fellow junior Alex Arellano at the weight class to keep it competitive. Sophomore Dalton Humeniuk has locked himself into the 152lb weight class after a very impressive freshman season a year ago. Freshmen Alonzon Ramirez, Cooper Nelson, and Cayden Gordon-Shea look compete and improve behind Dalton!
At 160lbs the Spud return some more sophomores looking to compete for a starting spot. Both Josh Beach and Azhar Salih highlight this weight class. Also pushing for a spot are junior Isaac Charley and freshman Christian Badillo. 172lbs appears to be Gabe Kekko a junior for the Spuds. Gabe will be challenged by freshmen, Nathan Steinert and Jered Pigeon.
Genesis Kamara, a junior, with experience wrestling in the 215lb weight class a year ago, looks to continue to build, this year down a weight class at 189lbs, He will be backed by sophomore Riley Paquin who also shows much promise! The 215lb weight class brings in a new face to the Spuds. Junior Billy Ward looks to be a solidified started for Moorhead where he will be backed up by underclassmen; Julius Cassel, Yousef Arif and Ari Habeeb, all freshmen.
Lastly, the big men! Senior captain Demarco Clay looks to pick up where Jake left off, and make a statement in the state of Minnesota. Behind Demarco is sophomore Mo Bakrin.
The Spuds are excited to kick-off their competition this Thursday where they will wrestle Little Falls, and Alexandria. They will continue their competitions on Saturday December, 7th in the STMA Invite. Make sure to come out and support, you won't want to miss this!
